The Carbon Capture and Storage Association was launched in March 2006 to represent the interests of its members in promoting the business of capture and geological storage of carbon dioxide (CCS). The Association's membership brings together a wide range of specialist companies across the spectrum of CCS technologies as well as a variety of support services to the energy sector.

The Association works to raise awareness of the benefits of CCS as a climate change mitigation technology as well as assisting policy developments in the UK, EU and internationally towards a long term regulatory and financial framework for CCS, as a means of abating carbon dioxide emissions.

The IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEA GHG) is an international collaborative research programme set up under the auspices of the International Energy Agency. IEA GHG focuses its efforts on studying technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. IEA GHG was established in 1991 and aims to provide its members with informed information on the role that technology can play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The IEA GHG membership currently includes 19 member countries, the European Commission, OPEC and 21 multi-national industrial sponsors.

The Programme has three main activities which are:
• Evaluation of technologies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
• Promotion and dissemination of results and data from its evaluation studies,
• Facilitating practical research, development and demonstration activities (R,D&D) The IEA GHG Programme to date has covered all the main anthropogenic greenhouse gases but currently focuses on CO2 reduction and in particular carbon capture and storage (CCS).

What is UCG?
UCG is a method of converting un-worked coal, while still in the ground, into a combustible gas which can be used for industrial heating, power generation,the manufacture of hydrogen, synthetic natural gas or diesel fuel. The gas can be processed to remove its CO2 content, thereby providing a source of clean energy with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Studies have shown that significant commercial quantities of coal can be obtained using UCG, in particular coal that could not be mined using conventional methods, thereby making available even more resources. Coupled with existing geological knowledge of coal seams, the abundance of coal globally, concerns over security of supply and the need to look for clean fuel options, UCG offers a reliable and cost effective solution to the increased world wide need for energy.
